5 years ago I got sick often.

Every few months I had a cold, strep throat or the flu. At the time I didn’t realize how heavily my diet & lifestyle impacted my body, but my health slowly deteriorated.

I eventually turned to food to heal my immune system. That’s when I learned firsthand nutrition is at the foundation of optimal health. I started eating a whole foods, plant-rich diet & made healthy changes to my lifestyle; within a few months not only was I getting sick less often, my mood improved, energy increased & I slept better than ever.

These are 3 of my favourite superfoods that help boost immunity, especially during cold & flu season, plus they have so many other amazing health benefits. 


Reishi mushroom immune superfood

These ‘shrooms are truly magical.

Native to China, Japan & Korea, the reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum) has long been used in classical Chinese medicine due to its high-vibrational healing powers.

Known as the longevity herb, reishi promotes homeostasis in the body with powerful immune-enhancing properties.

Reishi works as an immune modulator because of its active ingredients, which include: beta-glucans (complex sugars that boost immunity) & triterpenes (have antiviral, antibacterial & anti-inflammatory properties). These compounds work together to protect the immune system. 

Reishi is also one of the most potent adaptogens on the planet. Adaptogens are plants with therapeutic properties (a combination of amino acids, vitamins & herbs) that help heal & repair the body. They naturally restore balance & increase the body’s resistance to stress.


Reishi mushrooms have a woody, bitter taste. They can most often be found in powder, tincture or supplement form. Blend reishi powder with coffee, tea, elixirs & smoothies. I like it mixed in dressing & sauces for an extra nutrient boost.

Bee pollen is collected from the germ cell of flowering plants & brought to the hive, where bees add enzymes & nectar to the pollen. It’s made of tiny granules that vary in taste & colour depending on the plant it comes from.

It’s considered one of nature’s perfect foods because it contains nearly all nutrients needed by the human body to thrive. 

Bee pollen can be used medicinally for a wide range of conditions, from infertility problems to skin conditions & can help restore imbalances in the body. 


I love adding bee pollen to my morning smoothie. It’s naturally energizing, so I recommend eating it in the morning or early afternoon. You can also use it as a topping for yogurt, oatmeal & dips. 

Start small, with a few granules, & work your way up to 1-2 tablespoons per day.
