It feels like my body has been sucked dry of all its moisture!

Freezing temperatures, low humidity, & furnace air wreak havoc, leaving my skin feeling dry, flaky, & itchy.

So if you’re with me on this, I want to share a simple, chemical-free way to slough off dead cells & keep your skin feeling healthy & hydrated even in the coldest temperatures.

It was -42°C here in Ottawa this morning!! I basically got frostbite trying to unlock the front door without mitts.

This organic sugar scrub will help open detox pathways of your skin, retain your skin’s moisture, & added warming spices will keep you smelling (& tasting) delicious.

You can buy sugar scrubs almost anywhere, but this one has minimal, organic ingredients, & doesn’t contain damaging toxins that are harmful to skin.

Oh, it’s edible too.

Can’t eat sugar scrubs from the drugstore, can you?

Quickly, let’s talk ingredients:

I chose to use only organic ingredients. Our skin is the largest organ of our body. It’s also one of our body’s primary methods of detoxification; we excrete toxins through our skin. This is easily done when we sweat, but as temperatures get colder weeks can easily slip away without breaking a sweat, resulting in a buildup of toxins. Using this organic sugar scrub will help maintain an open pathway for elimination. Organic means chemicals won’t compromise the quality of the scrub & you can soak up all the skin-boosting nutrients & powerful antioxidants it has to offer.

Sugar is a natural humectant, meaning it draws moisture from the environment into the skin, helping to keep your skin hydrated. It’s a great exfoliant, helping to remove dead cells from the surface, revealing healthy, glowing skin. It’s also a natural form of glycolic acid, which weakens the binding properties of the lipids that hold dead skin cells together, sloughing off dead cells & exposing live skin cells.

It’s the high-quality fat of coconut oil that keeps your skin smooth & hydrated; the medium chain fatty acids retain moisture that’s easily lost through pores. Coconut oil is a great natural source of vitamin E; it’s essential for the growth of healthy skin & repairing tissue damage. Lastly, the proteins found in coconut oil aid in cellular health & tissue repair.

Added for enhanced exfoliation.

love cinnamon & ginger, especially for skin health.

Cinnamon is powerful because it:
Improves fine lines by plumping the skin
Contains antiseptic properties that kill bacteria
Increases collagen levels for up to 6 hours after it’s applied

Ginger is amazing because it:
Prevents free radical damage (ginger is full of antioxidants!)
Evens skin tone & improves elasticity
Protects the skin from inflammation
Reduces the appearance of aging

  1. 1 cup raw sugar
  2. 6-8 tablespoons raw virgin coconut oil
  3. 1 tablespoon shredded coconut
  4. 2 teaspoons freshly grated ginger
  5. 1 teaspoon freshly grated cinnamon
  1. Mix ingredients in a large bowl
  2. Store in an airtight container for up to 2 months
  1. I used Demerara sugar for its coarse texture.
  2. I like to use fresh spices & grate them using a microplane grater; this will allow you to obtain all the skin-boosting benefits the spices have to offer.

This product can be used daily. I recommend using it at least twice weekly for the purpose of detoxing, especially if you’re in a cold climate. Be gentle if you’re using this on your face & remember to apply sunscreen if you’re going to be in the sun after scrubbing, it will protect freshly exposed skin.

I keep a jar in the shower & one in my purse to exfoliate & plump up my lips whenever they’re looking a little under the weather.

Happy sugar scrubbing!
